The Problem
Local democracy has an access problem. The systems meant to let residents shape decisions — public comment, evening meetings, formal hearings — were built for people who can make it to a Tuesday-night meeting. Working parents, students, immigrant families, and low-income residents get quietly left out. The decisions still get made. Just not with them in the room.
What We Do
Learn — Young people study the real issues moving through their local government, using plain-language briefs on what's actually being decided.
Engage — They run community polls, gather their neighbors' input, and bring resident voices into the formal public record.
Lead — They deliver what they've gathered to elected officials and manage real civic projects — building the skills and standing to lead now, not someday.
Our approach, in a few principles
Meet people where they are. We build inside the schools and libraries young people already use.
Remove the barriers. Time, transportation, childcare, awareness, confidence — we design these obstacles out, rather than asking people to overcome them.
Pay for the work. Civic participation shouldn't be something only some families can afford.
Center those most often left out. The young people who build and lead this work should reflect the neighborhoods most often excluded from local power.
